Counseling Intern
AJ Thompson
He/Him
AJ is a counseling intern at Northwestern University working toward his master’s in clinical mental health counseling. With a background in music, AJ brings creativity, curiosity, and a down-to-earth vibe into the therapy room. He believes healing can be honest, compassionate, and even a little humorous—and that we all deserve a space where we feel safe being our full selves.
AJ’s approach is rooted in real connection. He listens deeply, honors your unique background and story, and works alongside you to understand what’s getting in the way of healing.
He believes therapy should reflect you—your culture, identity, passions, pain, and growth—all of it belongs.

Experience
AJ blends both traditional and holistic approaches to support your healing. He pulls from a variety of tools, including mindfulness, nervous system work, talk therapy, and creative practices. His work is informed by a mix of modalities like CBT, ACT, DBT, EMDR, Jungian frameworks, and trauma-informed care. He also brings experience supporting folks around substance use from his time as a peer educator.
Alternative Experience
AJ is deeply interested in alternative and liberation-based approaches to healing. He plans to continue studying psychedelic-assisted therapy, parts work, ritual, spiritual practice, art, sound, kink-positive, and LGBTQIA+ affirming care. His goal is to help people embrace who they are, especially the parts that have been hidden, shamed, or misunderstood. Humor, experimentation, and curiosity are all welcome in his sessions.
